Robert Stephens, PhD
Senior Human Factors Engineering Research Scientist
Dr.Stephens is an expert in the use of human factors engineering methods for the evaluation and design of process, tools, devices, and systems used by clinicians to enhance the safety, quality, and efficiency of healthcare delivery. His research has focused on applying human factors engineering to assess the adequacy of designs and the risk of failure in practice. In his PhD and dissertation work Dr. Stephens developed substantive collaboration between clinicians and non-clinical safety scientists to create a team for the development and evaluation of tools and cognitive artifacts clinical workers create and use to support them in their work. Dr. Stephens has bachelors and masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Ohio State University respectively, and a PhD in Industrial Systems Engineering/Human Factors Engineering from The Ohio State University, where his dissertation work was mentored by internationally regarded human factors professors, Dr. David Woods and Dr. Emily Patterson.
